Suce Creek Community Conversation Next Week

Our communities in Park County are at a crossroads. The recent development proposal in the Suce Creek neighborhood brought to light the pressures of rapid growth and raised questions about the future of our rural landscapes.

Join PCEC, Suce Creek resident Maggie McGuane, and planning expert Jen Madgic for an informative discussion. They will share details about the newly created Suce Creek citizen initiated zoning district, which serves as a powerful example of how citizens can come together and protect the character of their neighborhood.

This conversation will center on what it took for the Suce Creek community to pull together and decide to create a zoning district, with details about the hard work behind it, and how other Park County communities can learn from their experiences to pursue a similar action if they are interested.

A year ago, PCEC broke the news of plans by out-of-state investors for a posh vacation destination nestled up Suce Creek. Residents were concerned, and for good reason: they were about to become neighbors to 100 vacation cabins, a spa and restaurant — uses wildly out-of-character with the otherwise rural neighborhood on the border of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness.

Within a year, residents took the formal steps to create a citizen initiated zoning district in Suce Creek. This past August their proposed district was approved unanimously by the Park County Commissioners and the planning board.
