Join us for an in person community conversation about living with bears in the Shields Valley, hosted by the City of Clyde Park, at the Clyde Park Town Hall, October 1st at 6pm!
Living with wildlife is a fact of life in rural Montana, and the Shields Valley is no exception. We all make adjustments to our daily rhythms to accommodate their presence, especially bears. Many folks are quite comfortable living with bears, but are we TOO comfortable with them?
There is a fine line between the presence of a bear and one that has become habituated to human food and attractants. The consequences of habituated bears are very real, including the significant economic impact on landowners and producers who face property damage, crop losses, and livestock depredation.
And these consequences can also be a matter of public safety. As we've seen from a tragic incident in Red Lodge last year, the negative consequences of habituated bears are very real, even for black bears.
Being prepared is key to living safely in bear country. This event is more than a presentation; it's an opportunity to build a more resilient and secure community. Join us to learn essential skills and connect with local leaders dedicated to promoting coexistence and ensuring the safety of our families, homes and our wildlife.
What to Expect:
A Local Perspective– Hear directly from local producers from Highland Harmony Farms, about their hands-on experience with bear-proofing. Learn about the specific tools they use, their costs, and the practical application of these strategies on their property.
Expert Resources– Evan Stout and Blakely Adkins from Bear Awareness Gardiner will be on hand to discuss the valuable resources the program offers, including electric fencing and other mitigation tools available to communities in need.
Open Discussion– This will be a casual, conversational setting where you can ask questions, share your own experiences with bears, and connect with neighbors and local leaders.
