County Planning update on Growth Policy, Gravel Pit

The Park County Planning Board meeting went really well last week. Thank you to everyone who attended! It was really nice seeing friends and neighbors in person.

Your voice matters, and the Planning Board clearly valued your input. Next month, they promised to talk about the gravel pit proposal at their meeting.

We loved hearing from you. The comments were pretty clear — people care about this place and what makes it so special — public lands, the wild and free-flowing Yellowstone River, the herds of pronghorn in the valley and the sense of community for our rural community.

Here is what we learned:

Gravel Pit

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Planning Board members listened to citizen concerns and decided to devote more time to hear public input on the proposed gravel operation on state land north of Emigrant at its September meeting.

Growth Policy

The Planning Board also discussed the Growth Policy and the current attempt to repeal it by petition.

It appears as though the County won’t move forward on any update of our 2017 Growth Policy until the repeal effort is resolved. As of today, the Park County Clerk and Recorder has verified 706 signatures of a needed 1,075. If enough signatures are gathered by September 20, the question of whether voters want to repeal the 2017 Park County Growth Policy will be on the June ballot.

In the meantime, we think it’s important to educate the public about the importance of a Growth Policy and the risks of not having one.

Quite a few community members voiced concerns about the unplanned development that they’re seeing, and those comments helped fuel a good discussion.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up! We’ll keep you updated on county planning as more developments come.
